It is a turn based strategy game but having battles in real time. In the game the player starts as a ruler of a 16th century European country and has to build an empire.
The player has to control territories by conquest or by diplomatic means to achieve victory.
The player has to build an empire via exploration of the new world (America) & expand their empire achieving victory through economic aspects like productivity, resource allocation etc.
